For the Times’ T magazine, I traveled to Venezuela’s archipelago of islands. It was the tail end of Chavez’s rule. Not in this story was time spent with both pro and anti- Chavez Venezuelans. Passionate divisions that at the time seemed so foreign, but were a premonition of America in 2016 and beyond.

In 2011, I had the privilege of profiling Justin Vivian Bond, the groundbreaking performer, singer and artist. V had just changed her pronouns and announced herself as trans — using V and Mx — way before it was a thing. I think this article was the first (if not one of the first) that honored this freedom of expression, marking the beginning of trans visibility.
